If you have the factory fog-lights in your TJ, you may have noticed that they will only work when your headlights are switched to low beam. For us serious off-roaders, there are situations where it would be beneficial to have both your high-beams and the fog lights on at the same time. In some states having your high-beams and fog lights on at the same time is for off-road use only and may even be illegal (it may be a Federal law). However if you don't leave both high-beams and fog-lights on  to blind oncoming traffic, you should be OK. It is my belief that this decision should be left up to the driver and not decided for us by the government or the manufacturer. Hence I am offering to you a very simple Fog Light Relay Modification Mod that will allow you the option of having your fog lights concurrently on with your high-beams. This mod is possibly the easiest and the least expensive mod you can perform on your TJ in less than 2 minutes.

  1. Open the hood
  2. Locate the main fuse box just forward of the battery on the passenger side.
  3. Pull the fog light relay (it is listed on the diagram inside the fuse box lid).
  4. Turn the fog light relay over and you will see five pins. 2 wide vertical pins on the left and 3 smaller horizontal pins on the right. The upper right horizontal pin, labeled pin 1 at its base must be bent 180 degrees over with a pair of pliers so that it lays flush on the side of the relay.
  5. 5. Now reinsert the relay into the fuse box. Note that pin 1 will not enter its corresponding slot since you bend it over 180 degrees.
  6. 6. Start your engine, turn your high beams on and then turn on your foglights. If they are on you have successfully followed my simple directions. Congratulations.

I have read about other more complicated mods where you have to disassemble the relay and place an insulator between the contacts to achieve the same results. Now remember to dim down when encountering on-coming traffic.

*Update

The former mod should work on 2001 -2006 TJs where the relay is inside the engine compartment relay box.

Helping a fellow Range Rider performing this mod on his 99 TJ I learned that the foglight relay on the early TJ's is not located in the engine compartment relay box as described earlier. For the 99 and probably the 2000 TJ the foglight relay (there may be two) is located behind the glove compartment box next to the fuse panel. To get at the relay(s) remove the glove compartment fold down door by twisting the door out of its snap in hinges. Then identify the correct fog light relay(s) by pulling them out of their socket(s) and see if your foglights quit working. Once identified, turn the relay over. There should be 2 bigger vertical contacts on the left side and 3 horizontal smaller pins on the right. Then, with some large pliers bend the top right small pin 180 degrees over parallel to its case. Then reinsert the relay(s) and verify that your foglights operate with the low and high beam lights turned on.  Now reinstall the glove compartment door by pressing the three hinges together.
