Leon led the Range Riders 4 Wheelers run on Sunday, June 25, 2006. There were 4 vehicles: Leon & Dorothy and grandson Anthony, Peter, Troy and Janet Weiss, and Mitch & Susan Hohstadt. The run went through Ft Huachuca west gate and to the back side of the Huachucas where we explored Scotia Canyon.
It was a beautiful run in the forest with some interesting spots for Troy and Janet to try out their new Rubicon. Club members provided great advice for first timers Troy and Janet on driving and conquering the trail. Since Peter has a Rubicon he was able to give some great specific advice on the Rubicon. Troy and Janet made it successfully through all obstacles with only Arizona pin striping.
After finding the trail to the Canyon, we found a nice shady spot by the spring with tall
trees for lunch.
We proceeded up the canyon and found a pond with quite a bit of water in it. Peter even found evidence a bear had been near the pond although we didn't see any bears that day. We did spot deer throughout the day.
The trail ended at gate 7. The fun really started on the way back when Leon found a spot to play; a small hill climb with a nice large crack. Both Mitch and Leon made it up; Leon providing some nice dust. Dorothy then tried to climb the crack in Leon's truck and everyone had a good laugh when she somehow wound up going backwards and ended sideways at the bottom of the hill. She (and Leon's truck) were saved when her rear bumper hit a tree (wonder if Gordon taught her some of his driving tricks???). On her second try, Dorothy decided to take the easier side, but wound up turning around. After she turned around to go back down, her grandson, Anthony, was heard saying something like, "I can't believe I got in this truck with her!" After much nagging, Mitch let Susan drive his Jeep up with his guidance. Pictures of the vehicles climbing the hill (including Dorothy's exciting tree episode) were captured on video including Dorothy's tree hugging.
On the way back, our "navigator" Leon, wandered through some trails including an abandoned ranch with old buildings (not sure what it was since Dave wasn't there; Dave pretty much knows all these places).
We made it back easily with Leon's "expert" navigating. Everyone had a great time, including Anthony who kept us all going.
