My jeep hasn’t been running properly for quite some time. Originally, it sputtered and backfired, lost power as though running out of gas and then died on the side of the highway on my way home from a run last spring. This problem continued to be intermittent and frustrating over the past year. |

How Deep Is That Mineshaft? |

This question always comes up on many of our Range Rider runs when we stand gathered around an old vertical mine shaft staring into a black hole. Several people always have impressive answers, but no one is in agreement. Here is how you can easily approximate the depth of that mineshaft. The secret formula as I remember it from HS Physics is depth in feet = 1/2g x time2, where g is the gravitational free fall acceleration of 32 feet/sec2. To simplify, depth in feet = 16 x time2. The time is the time in seconds for a rock you drop into the hole to hit bottom. For example if it takes one second the shaft is 16 ft deep. If it takes 2 seconds the shaft is 64 feet deep, 3 sec = 144 ft, 4 sec = 256 ft, 5 sec = 400 ft, 6 sec = 576 ft, 7 sec = 784 ft, 8 sec = 1024 ft, 9 sec = 1296 ft, and so on. In any case be very careful here, stand away from the edge and let the rock drop out of your fingers when performing this simple science experiment.

A 6 Cylinder Hemi in Your Jeep? |

Maybe...
In the early '60s Jeep sold a hemi engine named the
Tornado. This engine was a 230 ci overhead-cam (OHC), overhead valve
inline 6 cylinder hemi engine. Hemi is a slang word for hemispherical
combustion chamber. A design introduced by Chrysler in the '50's and
popularized by the musclecar craze in the '60s. The Willys Tornado
Hemi engine was much more powerful than previous Jeep sixes. The
Tornado produced 140 hp at 4000 rpm and 210 ft-lbs @ 1750 rpm. The
engine was cast-iron with extensive use of aluminum components.
Debuting in late 1962, it was the only overhead-cam six produced by an
American company at that time. For comparison, the 226 ci
six available in Jeeps prior to this produced 115 hp at 3650 rpm and
190 ft-lbs of torque at 1800 rpm.

Vehicle Maintenance Day 2008 |

We went out to Gordon and Kathy's for a morning and early afternoon Mechanics/Maintenance Day. Members brought their rigs out for such things as CV joint/axle replacement, door repair, transfer case shifter repair, drive shaft boot replacement and more.
Troy brought his jeep out to repair a leak in the front axle seal but it was discovered that this job was too labor intensive given the lack of appropriate tools and time needed to remove the carrier from the front differential to access the seal. They had originally thought it was an outside seal but it turned out to be internal.
Vehicle maintenance is an important part of our sport. The club will sponsor more maintenance days with safety inspections that are open to all members of the club. This is an excellent opportunity for members who don't have the necessary tools, workspace or mechanical experience to perform routine repairs and maintenance to come out where other club members will gladly get themselves dirty to help. |
